The county, established on July 1, 1909, was named for William Andrews Clark, a Montana copper magnate, and U.S. Senator. Clark was largely responsible for the construction of the Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad through the area, a factor heavily contributing to the region's early development.
Clark County's major draw is the Las Vegas Strip, home to most of the hotel-casinos known to many around the world. This iconic Strip, however, being part of the Clark County, is really not within the City of Las Vegas limits. So you may not have been to Las Vegas city if don't venture a little further away from the Strip.
Clark County Government Center, a 385,000-square-foot, designed by renowned architects Fentress Bradburn and opened in 1995, has a sandstone exterior reflecting Nevada's geological characteristics, particularly that of Red Rock Canyon, the Valley of Fire, and other natural sandstone formations. The images of ancient petroglyphs embedded in interior and exterior walls pay homage to Nevada's cultural heritage.
The Government Cente contains a single-story auditorium, a pyramid-shaped cafeteria, and a cylindrical, six-story reception hall, as well as office buildings. The shaded, circular arcade completes the circular form of the buildings. Aligned radially with the columns are three rows of trees framing a sloped lawn amphitheater. A centered raised platform creates the stage.
