Rocky Mountain National Park is one of the highest national parks in the nation, with elevations from 7,860 to 14,259 feet (2,396 to 4,346 m),the highest point of which is Longs Peak.
Glacial geology in Rocky Mountain National Park can be seen from the tops of the peaks to the bottom of the valleys.
Besides mountains, the park also features lakes, falls and a wide variety of wildlife within various climates and environments—from wooded forests to mountain tundra—along with easy access to back-country trails and campsites. Over four million people visited the park in 2015, which is an increase of 21% from the prior year.
Elk can be seen in the park all year long. In the summer, large herds are found in alpine areas and along Trail Ridge Road. In the autumn, elk congregate in the Kawuneeche Valley, Horseshoe Park, Moraine Park, and Upper Beaver Meadows. Watch for elk along the edges of clearings early in the morning or in the evenings. Bugling is more often heard at dawn and dusk.
